Tell us about yourself and what led you to pursue a career in H&S.

I was born in Nebraska and spent most of my childhood in Washington State.  I didn’t really know what I wanted to be when I was growing up, so I have worked in a variety of industries in my life, and I have grown to enjoy construction the most.  I like the idea that every day doesn’t have to be the same and that every process can be open to outside-the-box thinking.  Health and Safety was admittedly not front of mind when I was younger.  Myself, as well as many people I worked with, could have been considered walking OSHA violations. It was actually working with a flagging company that started to get me interested.  When I saw how little some motorists seem to respect highway workers, it changed something in me.  In my mind, it was one thing to risk my own life for my job, but it was not okay that many others would put it at risk through their own negligence. 

Slowly, I came to realize that if I could be upset that a motorist won’t act as if they value my life, then I should be just as upset with myself for risking it at work. Then a near-miss accident sealed the deal for me.  I decided to meet with our company President and make an “I can be that guy” pitch to take over our health and safety function. He took a chance on me, and the rest is history.

What has been your favorite project or initiative so far?

I would say our semi-annual company-wide safety meetings. It’s nice to get everyone together and focus on workplace health and safety, while also having fun.

What is your favorite thing about working for B&K Enterprises?

The people and the culture. I have worked for many companies that treat their employees like a number, or like company property.  B&K Enterprises is very people-oriented in a way that I have not seen before.

What advice do you have for new employees?

Never EVER be afraid to ask questions, even if you think they are irrelevant or unnecessary.

The Current State of Mental Health in Construction

The statistics are alarming. According to recent studies, construction workers are significantly more likely to suffer from mental health issues compared to the general population. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that male construction workers have one of the highest suicide rates among all industries, four times higher than the national average. This crisis is driven by a combination of factors including the physically demanding nature of the work, job insecurity, long hours, and a culture that often stigmatizes seeking help.

A Personal Perspective: Loss and Legacy

Our Project Manager, Heather Kirsch, experienced this crisis in the most personal and heartbreaking way. A year and a half ago, she lost her son, who was also a member of our B&K family, to suicide. He was a bright young man, balancing his work with us while completing his college education. His passing was a profound loss that deeply affected all of us. In the wake of this tragedy, Heather has channeled her grief into action, founding a mental health awareness and support foundation called Ryley’s Reason. Her courage and dedication to this cause inspire us all and reinforce our commitment to fostering a supportive and open environment.

From my own experience as the General Manager, I understand the heavy toll that mental health issues can take on individuals and families. My son, now 29, has battled mental health and addiction issues since he was 14. Navigating these challenges has given me a profound appreciation for the importance of support and understanding. It’s a reminder that no one is immune and that everyone can play a part in providing the help and compassion needed to overcome these struggles.

Phillip Lambing, a union laborer who has been with us for over a year, is an important part of our daily operations on the highways. Phil starts his day early, preparing materials and making sure everything is in place for the day, which range from setting walls to drilling and pinning. 

Phil stresses the importance of road safety and expresses concern over distracted drivers, advocating for increased awareness and responsibility among motorists. 

John Zometsky is a foreman for B&K Enterprises, having spent approximately 14 years in highway construction. John’s day is structured around leadership and strategic planning, setting up his team for success. He makes sure that everyone is clear on their tasks for the day with pre-job briefings and positions team members where they can excel to maximize safety and productivity.

Both Phil and John exemplify the core values of B&K Enterprises through their exemplary work ethics and their commitment to leading by example in the field of highway construction. We are proud to have Phil and John as part of our team as they continue their work at B&K Enterprises.
